» As one would expect for someone of her small size, Mystic didn't eat a whole lot. That's not to say she didn't eat or anything, it's just that she didn't eat quite as frequently or as much as some other people might. While someone else might need a hot pocket and a half to kill off hunger, part of one would do it for her. She tended to skip meals- accidentally, of course- if she was busy doing other things. It was never intentional- while, yes, she did value not being fat, she didn't think she was fat, or had any real reason to watch her weight. In all honesty, she could eat anything she wanted and probably gain little or no weight at all, so that was not the issue. Sometimes other things just became more important to her, or something else commanded her attention. Usually, she would feel the effects later, when there was nothing else to do, and she would feel a tad hungry. Staying hydrated, however, was pretty much not an issue. Even if she wasn't hungry, she usually fixed herself a cup or two of green tea, which she would sip on periodically throughout the day. Even if she was sick, she usually had a cup of the tea nearby, since it was good for such a thing anyway, not to mention the natural antioxidants that would help her fight off whatever bug happened to be attacking her- and she would need all the help she could get.
» But when Drake asked if she were hungry or anything, she simply shook her head. While, no, she did not want him to have to get up or leave her side or anything, she honestly wasn't that hungry. She wasn't about to puke or anything, but the way the day was going, she didn't want to risk ruining a perfectly nice moment by emptying the contents of her stomach into the nearest bedpan. "No," she half-whispered. "I'm fine, really." With a small, reassuring smile, she tried to look fine, like she still wasn't completely rattled by the day's events. Even after hearing the heartbeat, significant proof that, yes, her baby was still alive, she was still scared half to death that, when it came time to check again, they would find nothing. That, accompanied by the other various things that had happened today, did not exactly make for the best in the way of nerves. "Besides," she began, "The food here is... Bad. Unbelievably bad. I made the mistake of forgetting to bring a lunch from home once... Worse than school cafeteria food." Way back in high school, Mystic packed every day because, quite frankly, the school food made her want to vomit. She wasn't exactly a picky eater, but that stuff was downright vile. After pausing for a second of thought, she began again: "Just a little thirsty, but it's not a huge-"
» She was about to inform him that it wasn't a huge deal- she could wait until later to get a drink, or even wait until she was home, if she had to. The drinks here weren't as bad as the food- she actually liked the obvious Gatorade rip-off- but she didn't want to cause a fuss, with Drake or whoever had to get the drink. But as she did, she heard the door creak, and then quick footsteps sounding like they were heading away from the room. Mystic sat back up, looking toward the door confusedly, but of course, nobody was there by that time. Was it a nurse? she wondered. Did they need to run another test or something? "Can you... go see who that was? Maybe it was important or something..."
» Well, she was half right, at any right. It was a nurse that had just all but run away from the room. But that particular nurse wasn't there to run a test. He was there because he'd been told his wife was brought in earlier, and even though he might be completely heartbroken, she was still his wife, he still loved her, and he wanted to make sure she was okay. But as he approached the room, he'd heard voices, and knew for a fact that Mystic didn't regularly hold conversations with herself. What he saw through the small amount of space he was able to look through completely shocked him- they were in the bed together! Give time to calm down a bit, he might have been able to walk in and talk to them, but this was all just too much to handle in one night, and he was afraid that if he went in there now, he would do something he'd regret.

As Drake had expected, Mystic claimed she wasn't hungry. He didn't know when the last time she'd eaten was, but he knew it had to have been before he did, unless she'd grabbed something at her house during the time after he'd left, before she'd come to the hot springs and found him there. That didn't seem like her, either.."Oh, by the way, honey, I screwed this guy, used to be engaged to him...Let's eat!" No, not very Mystic-like. He wasn't going to go shoving food (or anything else) down her throat, though, so he let it be. When she mentioned that she was thirsty, he was about to offer to go and get her something, but that momentary concern was quickly replaced with her request for him to go and figure out who'd been at the door. Drake wondered if it was really important; if it had been, wouldn't the person have just come in? A doctor would have...especially if they'd seen Drake in the bed. They'd probably come in and chase him out with a broom...or a rectal thermometer, or whatever doctors carried around with them that could be used to chase a guy out of a hospital room. Shaking off that mental image, Drake slipped off the bed, and went to the door, barefooted. He hadn't brought his socks, and at the moment, had no desire to put his shoes back on without them. Before, it had been an emergency, but now, it just wasn't worth it.
He pulled the door open and craned his neck around the edge of it, looking down the hall to the right, then to the left, before spotting the backside (back half, not ass...Drake didn't pay attention to things like that on other men) of the one person he'd been dreading the most. He could have gotten away with just pretending no one was there. He could have gone back to the bed with Mystic, and told her he had no idea who it was. But there had been so much lying, so much hiding from things, and Drake was so tired of it all. Lying to Mystic wasn't going to help anything. But he didn't know what to tell her, either, so he simply slipped out of the door, and hurried down the hall after Flannery. One of the saddest things about this whole affair (no pun intended) was that Drake had a feeling he and Flannery could have become good friends had the small matter of infidelity not come between them. He'd enjoyed the time they'd hung out together, and was starting to feel as if he might be regaining some semblance of a social life when the bomb had been dropped. Yes, Flannery was a nice guy. Why the hell did he have to be Mystic's husband? "Flannery! Hey, wait up." he called. Flannery turned, hearing his name, but upon realizing who'd been calling it, turned back and continued on his way. Drake sighed, and hurried to catch up to him.
"Then, he chased him down and raped him in the ass"
"OH GOD YES," screamed Flannery. "Give it to me, Drake!"
"Listen, Flannery, I know what I did was inexcusable, but you have to believe me when I say that I had no idea Mystic was your wife when I...when we..."
"Did you know she was married?" Flannery asked quietly, still not turning. Drake bit his lip.
"...Yes."
"Then what difference does it make if she's my wife? If she were someone else's wife, would that make it okay?"
"No, of course not...It's just..."
"It's just that you weren't expecting her husband to be someone who trusted you, were you?" Flannery finally turned, stopping and facing Drake. The fact that Flannery was a touch shorter than him did nothing to alleviate how small Drake was feeling at that moment.
Drake scratched at his eyebrow, a nervous habit he tended to lapse into when he was uncomfortable, then crossed his arms, halting alongside Flannery and diverting his glance towards the floor. "No." he replied, quietly. "I guess I wasn't."
”Well, then, here’s an idea. Try to avoid sleeping with other men’s wives altogether, and you can avoid these awkward little situations.” Flannery’s sarcasm was bitter, and Drake was feeling progressively more and more as if he were failing miserably at this conversation.
”I’m sorry.” he whispered. It was a terrible excuse for a reply, but it was all he felt he could say at the moment without sounding like he was making more excuses. ”Look, just...come back and see Mystic. I think...I think she’d like to see you.” [/blockquote]

» They both knew who they were talking about, and why they were talking about it. Only some idiot-man with an extremely bad temper would find himself as Drake and Flannery now were, facing each other, all but ready to kill one another, or something of that nature. But hearing the other man say his wife's name set him off. The muscles in his arms tensed as he struggled to hold himself in check. He couldn't just go pounding peoples' faces in, now, could he? He was by no means a jealous or violent man, but this was his wife they were talking about, a woman he'd promised to love forever, who'd promised the same thing to him. And now he could very well lose her. Without giving much warning he pivoted, grabbed Drake by the shoulders, and shoved him up against the wall. Drake might be slightly taller, but he spent all day with elementary school students, and even though Flannery didn't exactly have the most physically demanding job in the world, he did go to the gym occasionally. He was taking a bit of a gamble by even attempting to slam Drake into anything, but apparently it paid off.
» "So that just makes it all better?!" he fumed. "Say sorry, and all of a sudden you didn't just ruin my marriage?!" More of a lover than a fighter, this was uncharted territory for Flannery. He had certainly been in small fights before, as a child, but never anything this of this magnitude, with this much at stake. He knew killing Drake wasn't going to solve anything, or make anything better other than getting a bit of anger out on someone other than Mystic. Hell, it might even kill his chances at mending things, but by God, he'd come too far in this to just let go and walk away. Besides, if he let go now, and did walk away, how was he to know that Drake wouldn't simply attack him from behind? No, he decided, if anyone was going to get their ass kicked here, now, it wasn't going to be him. "Things were perfectly fine before you came along!" Even when he argued, Flannery tried to steer clear of things he knew would cut the deepest, because saying those things would only provoke the other person further, and make the situation worse. But this was unlike anything he'd ever been faced with, and required a switch-up of his usual self.
» Truth be told, things were perfectly fine before Drake came back into Mystic's life. Sure, maybe the couple was a bit discouraged, a tad of the spark having vanished when she lost their baby, but it was coming back- it wasn't like they had any problems. They would still laugh together, and were quite happy. Lately, though, Mystic had seemed a bit distracted- more so than her ADHD usually provided for- detached, even. And that, Flannery assumed, was around the time when Drake came around. He might be a little off, but still, did it matter now? He may never be able to be happy with his wife again, and as far as he was concerned, it was this guy's fault. Letting go and taking a step back, Flannery looked as if he were about to walk away. But instead of doing do, he sent one fist flying toward Drake's face.
» Having been startled by seeing one man slam another into the wall, one of the visitors for a patient down the call had run to the nearest nurse and informed them that they had probably better call for security. After taking a quick look, the nurse, who knew Flannery, sighed as she went back to the nurses' station and called security to tell them of a potential fight.

Drake was certainly not expecting to be thrown up against the wall, but in spite of the fact that he’d been dreading this all night, there was a sense of relief that went along with it. If it came to blows right now, at least he wouldn’t have to be worrying about it any more. He flinched as Flannery’s hands closed around the collar of his shirt, and suppressed a hiss of pain as first his shoulderblades, then the back of his head collided with the wall. It hurt. But he deserved it. How could he punch another guy for being resentful of the fact that Drake had fucked his wife? Obviously he didn’t like being slammed into walls or shouted at, even if what Flannery was saying was true. And it was, he knew. Flannery might not have realized it, but his words hit home. Nothing Drake could say, no amount of apologizing, or whatever favors he could think up, would change the fact that he had quite possibly taken away one of the most important things in this man's life. It was a horrible thing to do to another guy, and Drake felt horrible. Maybe it wasn't the manly thing to do, maybe it wasn't what Chuck Norris would have done, but Drake didn't fight back.
"I didn't think about it." Drake said, quietly, his voice strained as his chest was compressed. "I didn't...all I could think about was how much I wanted to remember, how much I needed..." He didn't want to say he'd needed the sex, although it had certainly been nice. No, what he'd needed was just...Mystic. He'd needed the reminder of her touch, the feeling of being at home after being lost for so long. He couldn't expect Flannery to understand that, though. He wouldn't have understood it, either, if he hadn't been through it. "It's just for the longest time, she was all I had." On the scale of pathetic comments from one to ten, Drake estimated that had been about a twelve. "I knew she was married, but I swear to God, when I was in her arms, nothing else existed." Oh, Drake, his sense of self-preservation scolded. That wasn't the best thing to say to a man who probably didn't at all want to hear about how you'd been holding his wife. That had probably earned him at least a black eye, he thought. Not that he was looking forward to it, but he was starting to keep a tally of all the things he'd done to deserve getting his ass kicked.
"This is not about me." he managed, his face inches from Flannery's, then, as Flannery gave him another half push, then walked away. Was he off the hook that easily, he wondered? His question was answered a second later when Flannery's fist came crashing into his face. Strangely enough, though Drake had been through military training (and high school) he had never taken a punch directly to the face like that. It wasn't in slow motion at all, the way punches were in movies. It happened so fast, he hardly had time to even turn his head away. There was the sharp crack as his teeth snapped together, all he felt was a sharp pain in his jaw. It knocked him dizzy, and for a few seconds, he had to force his eyes to focus just to keep his balance. It smarted like hell, and he wanted more than anything to just turn around and bring back to mind those basic training lessons on hand to hand combat. Flannery's punch had left his gut wide open. But if Drake punched him again, Flannery would punch back, again, and again, until they got arrested, thrown out, or knocked senseless. And as much as Drake wanted to get Flannery back
"No." he said swallowing the acrid, metallic taste of blood in his mouth. "We are not doing this here. Not now. There is a woman in there who needs at least one of us intact. So if you're going to hit me, hit me. But do it fast, and get the hell in there because your wife just nearly lost..." He stopped abruptly, his heroic little speech interrupted by his recollection that Flannery probably didn't even know Mystic was pregnant yet. [/blockquote]

» He didn't know the extent to which Drake and Mystic had been "in love", but he knew to what extend she and himself were, and right away had trouble fathoming that anyone else could ever have such a connection with her. There was no way any other man could possibly love her that much, as much as he. Sure, they might have been engaged, but since it was "a while back", he could only assume they had been teens- and no teen romance ever lasts, right? They wouldn't have worked. And now this asshole was all up in his life, trying to take his wife away from him. Drake seemed to be trying- and failing- to get him to understand, and he was sick of it. So he hit him. Not by any means the most adult thing to do, but it got the point across. Mystic was his wife, and this asshole had no business having sex with her. Besides, Drake wasn't exactly doing himself any favors, telling Flannery how much he needed his wife. He should have thought about how much he needed her before he went and let her think he was dead!
» Grabbing Drake and slamming him into the wall again, Flannery looked him straight in the eyes. "Almost lost what? This better be good, 'cause no matter what you're going to say, it's not nearly as bad as loser her." He had no clue about the baby- the hospital hadn't told him when they called him, and Mystic certainly didn't. She'd been planning on telling him just after his guest left- which means, since both she and Drake left before Mystic had any real alone time with him, that she'd never said a word. Of course, if he had known, he wouldn't have run away from the room. He would have gone in, whether Drake was there or not, to hold her. They were both completely devastated when she miscarried, and no matter how angry he was at her, or whether this one happened to be his kid or not, he wouldn't want her to go through that again. But he didn't know, and assumed Drake was just talking out of his ass to avoid getting hit again. It wasn't going to work. Flannery let go of him and then threw another punch just as Security rounded the corner and started running toward him.
» Flannery stepped away from Drake, keeping his hands where the security officers could see them- didn't want to get accused of attacking them, too, now. He wanted so badly just to keep hitting this man, the one who he blamed for ruining- or possibly even ending, if worst came to worst- his marriage. But he knew he couldn't. Security was coming, and if he kept this up, he would get arrested. Even if Mystic could overlook her punching Drake, he doubted she would take too kindly to having to bail him out of jail. Besides, he was just too pretty to survive a night in jail without getting assraped. "It's cool, guys. I'm leaving." And with that, he turned on his heel and started walking out. Yes, he probably should stay, and at least try to talk to Mystic, but right now, in his current state, he was afraid he might say something awful to her, and even though it was technically just as much her fault as it was Drake's for the whole problem, he didn't think she deserved to be yelled at by him. So he was leaving. For now, at least. He still loved her, but right now, it was best for both of them to stay away from each other for a while, if only to cool off and get their wits about them. As he walked away, one of the security officers approached Drake. "You want to see a doctor or something for that?" It was doubtful that the injury was life-threatening, unless Drake had some sort of bleeding disorder, but even to them, it looked pretty painful. At the very least, a doctor would be able to give the man an ice pack or pain pills or something.
» Flannery stepped out of the hospital feeling even angrier than before. He needed to drink- which he hadn't done in a rather long time. He needed to hit something. He needed a fight! But he figured it best to go home. If he got into a drunken bar fight, that wouldn't help matters, and his luck, he would be landed in the hospital, and if his bad luck persisted, in a room near Mystic's, even if it was only for a few hours. No, he would settle for the one semi-dangerous thing he could do on the way home that would both relieve a little bit of tension and get him away from there faster- break some traffic laws. As he took off in his car, he was going a good bit over the speed limit, with no cop cars in sight.

Drake wanted to think that he knew where Flannery was coming from with all of this anger, but he had to admit that he would probably (hopefully at least) never have to experience having Mystic, having her be his, having her in his life, only for someone else to come along and steal her away. Yes, he'd lost her, but it hadn't really been anyone's fault. It was a series of unavoidable circumstances that neither of them could control. He supposed he could have blamed the hostiles who'd caused the explosion that had put him in a coma, but that was a little far-fetched. Drake had willfully interfered with someone else's romance, and his absconding with Mystic's heart was no accident. It wasn't something he did while Flannery was gone and maybe never coming back, or without knowing that there had ever been anyone else. Flannery had unknowingly married a woman who'd been engaged to someone else. Drake had slept with her, knowing she was still married. The two weren't even comparable. Still, Drake felt somewhat offended (understandably, he though) at being punched in the face, and the cut on his lip still smarted.
Adding insult to injury, Flannery shoved him into the wall again, and stared him down, a startlingly cold look in his eyes, and Drake swore inwardly. He couldn't tell Flannery about the baby. It wasn't his place, and what's more, if it ended up being his, that would just make things worse. If Mystic ended up staying with Flannery, after all, the baby could be the one thing that helped them get through this. He couldn't jeopardize that, or make that decision for her. "Just..." He swallowed hard, wincing at the feeling of the wall against the lump that was already rising on his head from being shoved into it the first time. "She shouldn't have to lose both of us, which is what might well happen if we both end up getting sent to jail."
The second punch, Drake was a little more prepared for, and moved sideways just a bit. It ended up hitting him in the side of the neck a little after it had passed the full force Flannery had put behind it. Still painful, but not as bad at the first. Apparently, Flannery wasn't in the mood to reason with him. Drake could hardly blame him, but he'd already stood there and taken one punch, and now a second had been thrown at him and he was past the point of turning the other cheek. He sucked in his breath, and was about to try and give Flannery a good one in the eye when security came around the corner. He didn't see them at first, but he could tell by the way Flannery was reacting that something had changed, and he looked over his shoulder to see them hurrying towards him.
Flannery apparently didn't have any more interest in going to jail than Drake did, because he took off faster than Drake could run after him and stop him. Not that he would have, anyhow, given the reaction he'd gotten the first time he'd tried to talk to him, but still. Someone asked him if he wanted a doctor, and Drake shook his head. He'd been injured far worse than this before, and he wasn't going to go crying to the doctor because he got punched. "I'm fine. I just...I need to go.." Leaving the scene of the argument, he went back down the hall to Mystic's room, and opened the door slowly, peering inside. "...That was Flannery." he said, quietly, because after all, she'd sent him to find out who had been at her door. He didn't know if she'd heard the argument, but he figured she'd be able to tell anyway from the rate his lip was swelling up on the side Flannery had hit it.

» Mystic sighed, watching the door silently as she wondered if it was really a good idea to ask Drake to figure out who'd run away from the room. If it was really important, they would have come in, or at least come back. She knew the doctors around here would just skip the room and come back later if they suspected the patient was getting it on in there, and some of the older nurses, who were low on patience, would interrupt to take vitals or replace IV drips, no matter who they were interrupting or what they were doing. Even if it wasn't anything vitally important, whoever it was could just come back later if they needed to. There really was no need to chase them down and drag them back... What if Drake took this opportunity to escape? What if he decided he'd had enough of her crap and never came back? She couldn't handle losing him again...
» But that, she decided, was what had happened when he didn't immediately return. God, why did she think they still had a chance? Even though she highly doubted he would have just walked away on his own, Mystic was now beginning to believe that Flannery's existence would prove to be too much for him, and she'd be forced to give him up forever, and just stick with Flannery. While she'd been wishing for something- anything- to help her make this decision, to make it easier on her, she didn't want either of them to simply walk away. She knew she probably deserved it, what with her being the unfaithful one and all, but that didn't mean it would hurt any less. Fighting back tears, she reflected over how, if she and Flannery were only dating, or even still just engaged, there would be no decision; she'd be with Drake in a heartbeat, no question. Not that she would have any easier a time breaking a man's heart, but when one is just engaged or dating, a simple "we're done" is enough- not that Mystic would put it so callously- while when you're married to someone, there's the whole legal system getting involved and whatnot. If she and Flannery had not been married when she re-encountered Drake, she would have probably just sat down and talked to him, explained things in detail- while she definitely loved him, there was something there with Drake that she'd been missing, and explain all their history together, and how completely crushed she was about the letter. Hopefully, under those circumstances, they would have split romantically, but still remained friends. If that had been the case, the biggest question facing her and Drake would be whether they were still technically engaged or not, or if they should just start back at dating, square one; not whose child Mystic was currently developing.
» Just as she was about to give up and resign herself to being alone for the night, she heard the door and sat up, looking back toward it. At first, she didn't even heard what Drake was saying, because she was so focused on his lip. "Oh my God!" she actually half-shouted, uncharacteristically loud because she was so surprised. Who would just attack someone in a hospital like that? But then she heard him say it had been Flannery. "He hit you?!" So that was why the Security officers had run down the hall. She'd seen then through the crack in her door, but didn't make the connection between them, Drake, and the mysterious person who'd run from her room. As far as she'd been able to figure, it was some combative patient, or maybe a family member who was harassing hospital staff because they weren't getting the answers they wanted as quickly as they wanted them. She had never known Flannery to be a violent man. He'd never so much as raised his voice to Mystic herself, let alone hurt her. She'd seen him shout at people before, yes, but in his defense, they had provoked him; the fact still remained that she had never seen him actually get violent towards anybody or anything. She almost asked Drake whether he hit back, but didn't- she didn't want to know. She would rather know if he had managed to take the hits without fighting back, even though that would make her feel bad, because knowing the situation at hand, it was probably her fault. And if he'd hit back... she didn't want to think about such a thing.
» "Come here," she said gently, gesturing for him to come back so she could get a good look. "Does it hurt?" Of course it hurt- man, she felt dumb now. Still, it was a question more out of politeness than to gather information. "Oh, you poor thing... I'm so sorry... You should put some ice on that." Maybe not the greatest of advice, but it was the best she could do. "If you go to the cafeteria or something I'm sure they'll give you some and something to wrap it in."

It was a testament to Flannery's character that Mystic was surprised as she was to hear that he had hit Drake. If he'd been hearing the story from someone else, and hadn't been playing the part in it that he was, he would have thought it perfectly understandable that a guy would punch another guy in the face for sleeping with his wife. But Mystic knew her husband, and if she was surprised that Flannery had hit him, that meant it was rather uncharacteristic of him. Somehow, that was comforting to him and unsettling at the same time. He'd tampered with what had probably been a remarkable marriage up until this point, and he'd also managed to make a normally peaceful man turn into a seething ball of anger. "No, no...I'm fine." he assured her. Honestly, though he had supposedly been unconscious when his battle injuries were healing, but somewhere in the back of his mind he knew that his body had experienced pain exponentially worse than this before.
"Don't worry about me." he added, quietly. "Look...Flannery said...Actually, he didn't say much of anything...I think he just needs some time." He wasn't going to try and tell her what Flannery was thinking or feeling, but if Flannery had stormed out, he was either running off to commit suicide or just didn't feel like he could handle this right now, and telling Mystic the former wouldn't really help anyone, especially since he didn't think it was true. It was a safe assumption, he thought, so he'd shared it. "I'm sure he'll come back." he said, his tone hopeful, although the pain in his jaw made him think that he really wasn't hoping Flannery would come back at all, at least not while Drake was still there. He'd put up with it before, but he wasn't in the mood to be punched again.
He sat down on the edge of the bed, sucking his lip into his mouth, frowning at the hot, swollen feeling in his jaw. It wasn't that painful anymore, but it certainly was annoying. It wasn't all that masculine of him, but having Mystic take care of him, or even pretend to take care of him in that silly way that people always pretend to take care of other people when in reality they can't do much of anything about what's wrong. It was nice to have someone care, at any rate. Drake sometimes wondered if he'd made a mistake in moving so far from his parents' hometown; it would be nice to have someone around every now and then that he could talk to. But he had been so afraid that he wouldn't be what they remembered him to be, or worse, that he wouldn't remember some detail and he'd end up hurting someone's feelings horribly...He'd eventually decided that he should just try and find himself before he tried to reconnect with the other people who were involved in his past.
That had, of course, all flown out the window when he'd run into Mystic. That was utterly unintentional too, but he knew he didn't regret it now. Actually, it was making him reconsider whether he might not ought to look up more people from his past. He'd remembered so much of his past while he'd been with her that he couldn't help but wonder if it might help him to be around other people he'd known before the whole getting-blown-up incident. But that was a thought for another time. He had business to attend to here, on the island, before he thought about jetting off somewhere else. "Mystic, when we...when did you start feeling like..." He was going to ask her when she had started thinking she might be pregnant, but then he remembered what she'd said about randomly taking the test. Weren't there ways women could tell about things like this? "Can they tell you...can the doctors tell how far along you are?" [/blockquote]

» Oh, it was all her fault. As if she didn't feel bad enough that he'd expressed he wouldn't want to be with someone else, now he'd taken a punch for her. She didn't know how many punched Flannery had managed to get in before Security chased him off, or if Drake returned the favor; she didn't know exactly how much pain Drake was in- she had never been punched in the face, and therefore had nothing she could base her assumption off of- but imagined that being punched in the face was no fun at all. "Well at least find some Tylenol or something to take. It's got to hurt..." She sat up and grabbed his hand gently, figuring after that violence he probably needed a soft touch, and leaned over to give him a small kiss on the cheek. It would have been on the lips, but that might have hurt him, and she didn't want something meant to be comforting to turn into something painful.
» She rested her head on his shoulder. "I don't... I don't know..." she said, fighting back a sniffle. Not now, she told herself. She needed to toughen up. She needed to be strong. If she let her emotions get the best of her, nothing would go well. Besides, she was tired of so easily being made to tear up; she felt like an emotional mess. "They'll probably want to check again in the morning... I can ask then." The signs were probably there before she randomly tested. In fact, for several days prior, she'd been feeling ill, it just wasn't bad enough to want to call off work before today. It was more of a generic "icky" feeling, common to just about everything from a mild cold to, in this case, being knocked-up. It was like that last time, too; and the only reason she'd tested then was because she and Flannery had been trying to have a baby. This time, there was no wanting-to-really-know factor, since she and Flannery had decided to wait a while in order to better heal emotionally, and she definitely wasn't trying with Drake- that would have been really messed up. She probably should have guessed already. If she wasn't in denial, or too scared to even think it was a possibility, she probably would have found out much sooner.
» With a shaky sigh, she lifted her head off of Drake's shoulder and leaned back, with the backs of her shoulders against the pillows. "So, uh.." She was almost afraid to ask. "What are you going to do tonight?" She supposed asking him whether he was going to stay here with her or go home would probably have been better, but she was afraid of both. Afraid of asking him to stay, because if Flannery came back, he would probably wail on Drake some more, and also afraid that Drake might think she was asking him to leave. Actually, she would much rather him stay. She still needed to be held, needed him there, needed to hear his voice. But she couldn't possibly ask him to, not after all he'd been through. If he left, even for the night... it would sting. She was still so afraid that if he left, he wouldn't come back, and she'd be all alone...

Drake knew she was being careful, and smiled as she kissed his cheek, even though the smile made his lip ache probably worse than actually having it kissed would have. It was a nice gesture, and he appreciated it. Besides, he didn't want to make a bigger deal out of this than he had to. Whining about how mean old Flannery had hit him and busted his poor wittle lip probably wasn't going to impress her much, even if she probably would have played along and given him all the consolation he acted like he needed. He wasn't going to ask any more of her tonight than he'd already put her through, though...even without possibly impregnating her, he'd indirectly been the cause of a falling out between her and the man she was married to, thrown her into a hot spring, then ended up getting into a pseudo-fistfight with aforementioned husband...no, asking her to put up with anything else tonight was just cruel.
"Well, don't worry about it tonight then. We can deal with that come morning, okay?" He had a feeling that she just ought to sleep, at least until the doctors needed anything from her. And he wasn't going to leave her until he was damn sure there wasn't anything he could do for her. "I was...I was going to stay here, if you want me to, I mean." he told her. ”I have class at nine in the morning, so I’d have to leave around seven if I want to get over to my place, shower, then make it to the school on time.” He’d have to take a taxi, seeing as he’d ridden the ambulance over to the hospital, but he didn't mind. Taxis weren't cheap, but it wouldn't send him into bankruptcy to do take on once every blue moon, even on a teacher's salary. "You know something funny..." he said, recalling a conversation he'd had a few days ago with a group of his students. "The other day, a few of my students asked me when I was going to bring my children for them to play with." He lay back on the bed, beside her, and pulled her close, kissing the top of her head. "I told them I didn't have any, and I didn't know when I would." He wasn't sure why he was telling her that story, but he knew that, to him, he was a father, right now, until somebody told him differently. And even if they did, he'd have to see proof, and have Mystic tell him that she didn't want him to be any part of raising the baby, before he'd ever think otherwise.
"You go to sleep." he said, running his fingers through her hair. "And if I'm not here when you wake up in the morning, I promise I'll come back around lunch time, because all my classes are in the morning and there aren't any field trips today." He supposed he had lesson plans that he could work on, but they weren't really urgent, and even if he discovered some pressing work he had to attend to, he could always bring his laptop and come sit in the hospital room with her while he worked on it. "And you can call me whenever you want to, I'll leave my cell phone on." Technically, that wasn't allowed at school, but he didn't care. All he could think was that he'd just been given what might be a second chance with one of the most important things ever to be involved in his life, and she took priority.

» She smiled a little as she was pulled close, glad he was going to stay. Of course she wanted him to- not only did she not want to be alone, but she was still afraid that if he left he wouldn't return. Ridiculous, maybe, but at least if she could see him, hear his voice, feel his touch, she knew he was still alive. If he was out, she would have no guarantee. Maybe she was losing it a bit, maybe she was just damaged by losing him once, and was afraid of losing him again. In many ways, she was still like a little kid. She was afraid of the hospital at night, She'd worked night shifts before, more than once, but even though the NICU was an eerie place to be in the middle of the night, there was always another nurse or two there. If Drake had chosen to go home, she would be deathly afraid of her little room here, though of what specifically, she had no idea. Monsters in the closet? Ghost in the bathroom? Vampire under the bed? Maybe not. But still, nobody really wanted to be alone at night. Resting her head on his chest, she couldn't resist a little laugh as she tried to imagine the students grilling him about why his lip had a boo-boo.
» There was no way she could really be sure whose baby this was. She could have strong suspicions, yes, or maybe even be fairly sure who she thought was the father. Hell, she could want one man to be it more than anything else in the world. But the reality of the situation was, she had no idea whose it was, and had no control over the situation. Hell, even if she was given control, asked by the Powers That Be who she wanted the father to be, she wouldn't want to have to decide. She wasn't sure whose she wanted it to be, or of any reasons why she would choose one of them. Things like this were much better when left to chance. No matter whose it was, she had no doubt that, if she did ultimately end up with Drake, he would be an excellent father. Even if it wasn't his biologically... she could only hope she would love it as if it were. Same with Flannery- if he could ever forgive her. Drake hadn't said it directly, and maybe there was a simpler explanation for it, but Mystic got the impression that Flannery hadn't wanted to see her. Sure, maybe he had when he first came to the hospital, but judging by the way he'd left without speaking to her, she figured he probably changed his mind. That stung a little, but having Drake there to hold her took the edge off.
» She nodded a little, suddenly feeling very tired again. Despite being a normally good sleeper, she doubted she'd sleep well tonight at all, let alone enough to be considered "good". There was too much circling around in her head, too much she had to think- and worry- about. She supposed maybe taking her Ritalin would help her concentrate on sleep, but she wasn't exactly sure if that was harmful or not to her baby. She made a mental note- which was subsequently lost- to ask that of the doctor in the morning. She thought it a bit ridiculous that she would want to call him on his cell, knowing he'd be teaching. As much as she might need him there, she didn't want to risk getting him in trouble with his boss- unless, of course, it was some huge emergency. But unless she was dying, or did end up losing the baby, his phone wouldn't ring and be a call from her. This, in turn, triggered thoughts of her own cell phone, and she let out a soft groan. It had been in her pocket when Drake pulled her into the hotsprings, and unless the crappy little tracfone somehow, by some huge cosmic event, became water-resistant, it was undoubtedly still in her pocket, now rendered useless. Luckily, it was just a cheap little prepaid phone- Mystic didn't really call people a whole lot, and she wasn't exactly into texting or taking pictures with her phone, so it was fine for her purposes- and she could easily get her leftover minutes transferred onto another, new phone. It wasn't some huge deal. Unless there was some emergency between when she had access to landlines, she would be fine. Unlike some people, who were very much attached to their phones, some of whom paid more than a hundred dollars for said phones, and would be infinitely upset at it being killed via hotspring, Mystic really wasn't all that fond of her device, had paid a whopping ten dollars for hers, and really wasn't phased by its destruction. Besides, there were way more important things in life than worrying about some stupid little phone she barely used.
» She didn't fall asleep right away. In fact, even after Drake did, she couldn't. But she didn't want him to suffer, too- he needed sleep just as much as he, if he didn't want to seem half-drunk in front of his students in the morning; besides, sleep would accelerate the healing of his lip, if only a little bit. She wanted so badly to talk to him all night, but forced herself not to. And once he did fall asleep, she kept feeling the urge to twist around, move- it drove Flannery crazy, she'd been told by him, how she never managed to stay in one place at night- but forced herself, using every ounce of her self-control, to remain near-perfectly still, never making any movements that would risk waking him up. She did, however, finally manage to drift off some time around six AM, and by some miracle wasn't awakened by Drake's departure. Unfortunately, that didn't mean she was going to sleep for very long. Shortly after Drake left, a knock on the door dragged Mystic back into the realm of awakeness, and with a sigh, she sat up partially, stretched a little, and called out a soft "Come in..." Of course, it wasn't Drake, or Flannery, or anyone she really knew. It was the doctor, there to inform her that in a couple minutes, a nurse was going to come down to take her to check on her baby again, and that afterward, he really needed to speak with her. Mystic found it a bit odd that a doctor was there informing her of the impending check-up; a job usually left to the nurse. There was also a bit of blood, she noted, on the upper part of his scrubs, though she couldn't exactly tell how much because his white lab coat was buttoned up so far. Almost immediately after he walked out, she nearly panicked. Had something happened to Drake? Oh, no... No no no... She couldn't lose him again. She refused. The thought that it could be Flannery completely evaded her mind.
» Today, as it turned out, was not going to get any easier than yesterday had been. Coming back into her room- after having waited in the ultrasound room for hours, because there were several emergencies the doctor had to tend to before coming to her. She understood completely, of course. While she did think the health of her own baby was important, as far as she knew, she wasn't exactly an emergency, or in danger of dying, and neither was her baby. Whatever else was going on, she was sure those people were having a worse day than her, and needed more immediate attention. She could wait. A bit skittish, impatient- but she could wait. But once they got started, and the technician explained to her what exactly she was seeing- not that she needed an explanation, as it was blatantly obvious- she almost wished, feeling guilty for doing so, there had been more emergencies, or maybe that she was going to have to wait until some other time to get screened. God, what was she going to tell Drake? If nothing else had managed to scare him away, make him want to give up, this surely would. Or at least make him seriously consider it. Hell, she would probably run away if she could. Unfortunately, she had no choice in the matter. But how was she going to tell him? He'd probably figure it out at some point, or if he was particularly dense, he;d figure it out at the very end. But at some point, yes, he would have to know.
» With a sigh, she sat down on the edge of her bed, staring at the picture. Any idiot could look at it and know exactly what they were seeing. It didn't take any special medical training. Hell, even if you'd never watched Discovery Health or TLC, you'd know what two- yes, two- solid black patches right in the center meant. As if one weren't confirmation enough, there were two shots- different angles- right below it that showed the exact same thing. This was no technical error, or something wrong with the lighting. Mystic was in for one hell of a ride; and if Drake chose to stick around, he would be too. But she didn't have long to freak out about what Drake's reaction would be, because just then, the doctor came back, this time in a set of scrubs. He asked her to come along, that he needed her to identify someone. Oh, no... No no no... Something happened to Drake. Maybe it was to her sister? God! She knew, somehow, that her sister would eventually drink herself to death, but didn't think it would be so soon. Hell, they were barely legal drinking age, for Pete's sake. Still, she decided to stay as calm as possible. They had no proof. Maybe it was someone else's loved one- their problem, not hers. Horrible as it would be for anyone to lose someone close, she would rather it not be herself. She set the pictures down on the bed, and as she left, she asked a nearby nurse- who she knew- if she would wait in the room in case someone came to visit Mystic. Mystic didn't think she'd be gone long, but didn't want Drake, or anyone else, to think she'd up and left.
» As the curtain was pulled back, Mystic had to stumble back a step and turn away. Not that the sight really grossed her out in that way, it was just... hard to look at. They'd pulled the blanket over the worst of it, and luckily his face was still intact, save for a few small cuts- perhaps from broken glass- but that did nothing to ease the shock. There was no way. No way in hell. It didn't really sink in at first. Instead of immediately bursting into tears and demanding that they start CPR or something right that second, she turned slowly back around and stared at Flannery's face, lying there on the table. It couldn't be. He had to have an identical twin brother nobody knew about. She knew it was impossible, but she was grasping at straws here, trying to make sense of it. Just last night he'd been so much alive, so full of life, high on it, even. He'd held her, given her a hug. Granted, it was probably the worst night they as a couple had ever experienced, or ever would experience, but at least he'd been alive. She clamped one hand over her mouth as she sank into a chair one of the nurses had placed beside the bed just before Mystic got there. She closed her eyes, finally letting a few tears slip past. This couldn't be happening. Any second now, she would wake up next to Drake, bid him farewell as he left to go teach, and have the same set of problems they'd been facing when they fell asleep. Anything but this...

It took a lot of willpower for Drake to drag himself out of the hospital bed that morning. He felt well-rested enough, but along with that comfortable feeling of having had enough sleep to fool his brain into thinking it had fully recovered from the events of the previous day, there was also the overwhelming sense of being exactly where he ought to be. Surely he wasn't needed anywhere else as much as he was needed right here. Surely no one else could possibly require his attention as much as this woman deserved it. But whether or not they deserved his attention, the school board signed his paychecks and he really needed those to pay the rent, buy food, and other things that made the difference between him and Brian the homeless guy out on the curb begging for cash.
He called a taxi on his cell phone, which was almost dead, then went home and plugged it into the charger while he showered and dressed. By then, it was almost ten minutes until he had to leave for work, so he ate a quick breakfast of some dry, partially stale cereal he found on top of his refrigerator, brushed his teeth, and hurried out the door, making sure he had his keys. It didn't occur to him that, having had a recent episode such as the one he'd had when Mystic had been at his apartment after...the other incident, he might not ought to be driving, and it could have turned out rather dangerously for him as well as the other people out driving that morning, but he got to the school without any sort of accident, and was in the classroom waiting when the children began to file in.
He taught the class in something of a distracted haze, hardly noticing the second-graders' whispering giggles at the obvious injury on his lip. In fact, he didn't notice at all until one of the children actually pointed at it, and then, he cracked a smile. Of course, that would look strange. He was their teacher, not a superhero who went out and fought bad guys. Why would he have a bruised jaw and busted lip like that? "Mr. Minor had a long and drawn-out argument with a very angry kangaroo last night." he told them, then, hoping they were still young enough to be distracted by that odd fiction that they wouldn't ask any more questions (and would hopefully go home and tell their parents the same story, resulting in the assumption that they were simply making things up), and went on with the lesson.
It seemed like forever before he finished, although the class period was just like any other hour. But when the children were gone, he left so quickly that even if his supervisors had wanted to talk to him, they wouldn't have been able to catch him. The last thing he wanted was to have Mystic thinking that he'd left her once again. He knew her; she'd be worried if he took too long to come back, even if it were no more than a half hour longer than he'd said it would be. And he couldn't blame her. She'd waited on him once, only to be told that he was dead. He wasn't going to intentionally put her through any more worrying. The drive to the hospital was not as long as the drive from his place to the school, and he drove a little faster than might have been legal. Thankfully, no one caught him, and he parked, locked the car, and headed inside.
To his surprise, Mystic wans't in her room. He figured she'd just gone to the bathroom. That was his first suspicion. There was a nurse in the room who assured him that Mystic would be back soon, but she wouldn't tell him anything other than that, so he sat down on the edge of the bed, under the frowning glance of said nurse, and folded his hands. As he sat there, he noticed a black and white image on the bed next to him, and picked it up carefully. Before, he'd really just heard the heartbeat of the baby, but he supposed this must be a picture. He cocked his head to one side, trying to figure out what exactly it was he was seeing. Two dots. "Excuse me, ma'am." he asked the nurse, "Is this...erm...are these my baby's eyes?" He felt relatively certain that they weren't, seeing as they were huge in comparison to the rest of the picture and if the eyes were that big, he and Mystic had made a tadpole or some equally freakish thing. But he honestly had no idea what the baby would have two of, other than eyes, ears, those things above the neck...or...if it was a boy...er, no, that was even more ridiculous.
The nurse gave him a look that clearly stated the fact that she thought he was a complete idiot, and shook her head, but didn't justify his density with a response. So Drake was left sitting in uncomfortable silence on the bed, holding a picture that was most certainly not his child's eyes or testicles but which he had no idea what it really was, trying to avoid the stern gaze of the nurse, who still hadn't said a word to him beyond. "She's comin' back, don't get your britches in a bunch." He had no idea what to do besides sit and wait, so that was what he figured he'd do. He hoped Mystic hadn't been taken in for some sort of emergency surgery. He touched the picture softly with one fingertip, not knowing that it was an image of not one baby, but two, but knowing that he still loved it already because it might be his...and even if not, it was Mystic's. And he loved Mystic. Therefore, he would wait for her. [/blockquote]

» In comparison to the way she'd reacted to Drake's supposed death, she was actually very calm at the moment. Granted, she was still not calm compared to her normal self, but anybody would agree that they don't want to meet the person that stays exactly like themselves when faced with the death of a spouse. She wasn't sure how exactly he got killed, but assumed it must have been an accident. No matter how angry he might have been at Mystic, no matter how heartbroken, she knew it just wasn't like Flannery to try to off himself. He might have pondered it briefly, but she highly doubted he would ever act on it. Part of her wanted to know, as if knowing the cause of death would help bring her closure, while the other part of her was afraid to. What if it was something horrible that would haunt her for a long time?
» She knew he couldn't hear her, that there was no possibility he would ever know what she was about to say, but she needed to speak to him. He was dead, gone forever, but unless she told him what she needed to say, she would never forgive herself. After looking over her shoulder to make sure no one was there, she leaned over, gently stroking Flannery's head, choking back more tears. "I don't expect you to forgive me right away, or any time soon," she started quietly, using her other hand to wipe away a tear. "But I... I didn't do it because I don't love you. Never think I don't love you. I did right from the start. You know that. I still... I still do. No matter what..." But she'd been leaning toward Drake right from the beginning. She was denying it at first, telling herself that she needed longer to decide, not wanting to be hasty. She didn't want to admit that she was leaning more toward one man than the other. Maybe, somehow, Flannery knew. Maybe something in her eyes had told him, and he knew before she was ready to admit it. Maybe if she'd been more neutral, or more leaning toward him, he wouldn't have given up on life so easily... Or maybe he didn't know. Maybe he'd given up on purpose, let himself die from wounds that, any other time, he would have fought off quickly, just to save her from having to make a decision. Did it matter now? Leaning over farther, she plant a small peck on his lips- nothing huge, since even though she wanted their last kiss ever to be special, anything more would just have been creepy- before laying her head down on the bed next to her shoulder (still partially sitting in the chair.)
» She was out for a short while when the rustle of curtains woke up up. Sitting bolt upright, she turned to see another nurse there- one she knew. The other nurse came over to Mystic and hugged her. "I'm sorry, child." "Thanks," Mystic answered, hugging back. Mystic was one of the youngest nurses on staff at the hospital, and some of the other ones had taken sort of a mother-like quality to her. They shared a stressful job that, often, kept them seeing more of each other than their families, so the nursing staff here had formed a pseudo-family of their own. "Are you ready to go back to your room?" Nodding, she stood. Even though Mystic knew she would be given as long as she wanted- as long as she needed- to just sit there and effectively say goodbye to Flannery, she knew Drake would be there soon, if he wasn't already, and didn't want him to worry about where she was. Besides, she'd have more time to deal with this later. She stopped and looked back at Flannery one last time before letting the curtain drop behind her and walking back to her room.
» She stopped at the doorway, staying where she couldn't be seen, except for by the nurse there, who left upon seeing Mystic. Sighing, Mystic leaned against the wall, using the back of her hand to try to get rid of the evidence she'd been crying. She wasn't ready to admit Flannery was gone, and if Drake saw she'd been crying, she was fairly certain he would demand an explanation. And if she told him about hat happened, that would be admitting to herself it was true. While she didn't want to outright lie to Drake about where she had just been, she would do everything she could think of to dance around the subject until there were no options left. Though, no amount of rubbing would get rid of the mark on her cheek, indicative of her falling asleep on top of some sort of crease.
» Finally, she took a deep breath, let it out, and walked into the room, offering a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Hi," she said, truly struggling with her tone, not wanting it to be too quiet, since that was a dead giveaway something was wrong. "How- how did school go?" she asked, sitting carefully down on the bed next to him. But instead of looking him in the eyes, she focused on the pictures in his hand, trying to see if that, more than anything, would offer her some way to smile for real. She wondered, without asking, if he'd actually figured out what he was looking at, but unless he asked her what it was or told her he'd figured it out, she wasn't going to say anything.

Drake sat alone in Mystic's room, blissfully unaware of the crisis that had occurred in the same building. Of course, he had no way of knowing what Mystic was going through, no way at all. And when she came in, she seemed all right, if a little quiet, but he expected that was just because of the situation they were currently faced with. Hell, anyone in that situation might not feel like talking. Before his injury overseas, Drake hadn't been much of a talker either. He'd preferred to keep his private matters private, his secrets secret, and didn't go around gossiping. But after he'd come back, he had begun to find that talking about things actually helped him remember little details, and the more details he had, the clearer the whole picture that once was his life became. It was like sharpening the focus on an image...each little increment brought the image closer and closer to being a perfect picture in his mind. Which it should be; it was his life, after all. He should know it better than anyone, and it was incredibly frustrating to have people constantly reminding him of things that he knew he should remember on his own.
That was one of the things that had concerned him the most when he'd been reunited with Mystic. At first, he was afraid that he might be latching onto her simply as something predictable, something comfortable and familiar, and not for the reasons he ought to have been. But this...this wasn't familiar, and wasn't immediately comfortable. And he still loved her, still wanted to be there for her. That in itself was comforting. It made him feel like he could trust his own emotions again. But what he couldn't know was that he was so completely wrong on this one issue that if he had been aware of what was going through Mystic's mind, he might have abandoned all hope in his abilities of perception forever. Because right then, as she walked back in, he was so glad to see her that he honestly couldn't tell that anything out of the ordinary was wrong.
He shrugged. "It was all right." he said, smiling softly. "The kids think I was attacked by a wild kangaroo now, but it wasn't a bad morning." He had set the picture down for a moment, but after that declaration, he looked back at it. "Um, so...I feel really, incredibly stupid saying this, but...what are we looking at here?"
"Well, it sure ain't eyes." the other nurse said, as she walked out, apparently determining that Mystic could take things from here. Drake sighed, and offered no explanation for that statement, instead turning back to Mystic. The nurse had been giving him the evil eye the whole time she’d been in the room, and he was just glad she’d gone off, probably to bother someone else who was waiting for a loved one. She’d started to creep him out just a little bit, and he suspected she knew what he and Mystic had done and was secretly judging him for it. He could almost imagine her shaking a finger at him and telling him that Jesus was watching him.
"Is it like...feet?" he asked. Honestly, Drake had no idea what babies were supposed to look like besides...well, babies. He certainly wasn't expecting his children to look like blobs, hell, he wasn't expecting that he'd have more than one child inside a woman at a time. It wouldn't be his first guess, that was for sure, even though twins ran in his family. His older sisters, Isobel and Felicity, were fraternal twins, and he'd heard that his grandmother on his father's side had been a twin, too. But none of that was anywhere near the front of Drake's mind as he tried to lighten the mood a little by telling her what some people might think was an amusing part of his day, and peered down at the fuzzy photo of his child(ren). ”I don’t guess the feet are that big yet, hm?” he added, trying to prove that he wasn't a complete idiot. Dammit, he was a military man turned elementary school teacher, not some genius biology freak. [/size]

» Any other time, she probably would have been smiling- for real- and laughing. It was definitely amusing, the thought of Drake telling such a cute fib to his students, or the thought of him actually getting attacked by a kangaroo, even though the only ones anywhere near there were at the zoo, securely in their enclosures. What would Drake have been doing climbing into the kangaroo habitat, anyway? If his students were any older, they probably would have called him on that, knowing he was lying, but since they were so young, Mystic assumed they would have been content with anything- he probably could have told them he was fighting robot aliens and they would believe him. Small children were so carefree...
» Mystic had never been one to call people stupid. Even when the situation called for it, and the person she was talking to was obviously a complete retard, Mystic would smile and answer any questions politely, keeping any weird looks or comments to herself. Working in the NICU, she got the same barrage of questions again and again by concerned parents, often about things that were obvious, that they should be able to answer on their own. It wouldn't do anyone any good in such a situation to be told that they were idiots. But right now, Mystic was so far out of her normal self that she was liable to call Drake just that- an idiot. Any idiot should know what they were looking at! It was too much for her, all at once, in one day, and she was about at the end of her rope. Still, she managed to control herself as best she could. That's not to say she wasn't tempted to slap him upside the head and tell him he was stupid...
» She just kind of stared blankly at him for a second, her expression flat. "Seriously?" she asked, something in the tone of her voice suggesting just what she thought of his intelligence. She never thought he was stupid before, despite the fact that they didn't exactly require brains in the army so much as muscles. "No... No, those aren't feet," she started, strongly resisting the urge to whack him. "Nothing is that big yet." She took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down. It would do no good to yell at him about it; that would probably scare him off, if nothing else did. "I'll put it in terms you're likely to understand. It's like... Basic training, and then advanced training." She paused for a second, frowned, and looked away. "No, not a good example. It's a two-part operation." She looked back at him, something telling her that he still didn't get it. "I'm assuming you know the alphabet, yes?" Of course he did. He did teach elementary school, and even though his subject wasn't English, she assumed all teachers were required to know the alphabet. "A..." she said, pointing to one blob, "B." She pointed to second blob, then pulled her hand away, lightly chewing on her lower lip. Maybe he wouldn't get it even now- and if he didn't, he better run. Mystic could only handle so much stupidity before she would want to strangle him, even though two deaths to deal with today would probably kill her.
